For this story, I wanted to get as close to the burnout contest as possible. You can see me backing up when chunks of rubber finally began flying off the tire. Bob Bixler Jr. provided good color commentary and insight into the reasons why people get into burnout competitions despite how expensive damages can get.

Sometimes you go into a story expecting one thing and an act of god can completely change what you end up covering. What was going to be a light piece about local entertainment ended up becoming weather coverage. When the storm hit, I had to take cover behind a tractor to keep from getting hurt. I decided to keep filming to demonstrate just how intense the situation was.

Not only did it give the reader both a nice read to get an update on the timeline of forest clearance, the supplemental video was intended to give the reader a sense of what the operation looks like on the ground level. This nicely compliments the top-down view perspective from the print component of the article, making for a professional, informative package.

Here is why I love this video: it speaks for itself and provides an example how print can't always cover exactly what goes down at an event. Instead of risking editorialized language in a news article, why not let video do the heavy lifting? Here, the viewer can decide for themselves whether the exchanges between the public, Post Office employees and Postal Service executives were cordial or not.

I'm proud of this story because it alowed me to go for documentary style coverage. I aimed to use b-roll to transition into and between stories to provide a sense of being there. I also convinced one of the event coordinators to drive alongside a cyclist while they were in the race to get a unique interview. All these techniques aimed to keep the viewer engaged.

This was part of my series investigating the economic impact eastern red cedar has on the plains area. It is a difficult plant to combat and use, so I wanted to cover the efforts architecture students at UNL took to make the wood useful. This video helped summarize what the article went in-depth about.

about me

Professional digital journalist who utilizes all aspects of media to tell meaningful stories.

The medium is the message, and I believe that every element of media holds its own distinct potential to inform the reader.

There's nothing that will replace the simplicity of holding print in hand and reading ink on paper.

However, I believe the news' transition to digital presents new opportunity. For one, videos, interactive tables and hyperlinks to relevant information can now accompany articles.

We can have public discussion on social media, allowing for immediate feedback from the audience, as well as more granular analytics giving us more precise insight on what the readers want. We also have seen an industry divestment from advertising towards more content-driven monetization strategies, allowing us more freedom to develop enterprise stories.

I am glad to be one of the journalists to help usher this important industry into the next decade of change and I have enjoyed the storytelling opportunity these changes have already afforded me. I look forward to what happens in the next generation of news.
